"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it"

- John 1:5

I believe the purpose of our inner light is to help illuminate the way for ourselves and others, which is why I chose to pursue a career in art therapy. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts with a focus in Illustration and Design from The Illinois Institute of Art - Schaumburg. After my undergraduate experience, I spent a few years trying to "make it" as a graphic designer but quickly became disillusioned with the field. I did not want to dedicate my life to helping businesses communicate with consumers, but instead, I wanted to help people communicate with people.

This revelation led me to take a step back and explore another long loved passion of mine that stemmed from the deep connection I had with my Abuela (grandma). I decided to try using my creativity in geriatrics and became the main Activity Coordinator for the memory care department of Lincolnwood Place. While there, I witnessed first-hand the benefits of recreational therapy for people with Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia. I am amazed at how art and music can help people's eyes light up again despite the debilitation of illness. When my seniors passed away during the pandemic, I took that as my queue to move onto the next stage of my life as well.

I began to pursue my graduate degree in Art Therapy. I have enjoyed learning hands-on so since my studies began and have practiced working with a variety of populations. I was a Shelter Advocate and worked directly with victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. I was a behavior technician and practiced teaching new skils to children living with Autism. I was also a Mental Health Associate and worked directly with teenage girls in crisis. Most recently, I had the privilege of working with North Shore Senior Center as a Care Coordinator and assisted seniors in accessing community resources. Now, I am honored to continue gaining experience and helping my community directly during my internship with Phoenix Clinic as the Community Connections & Partnerships Intern.
