<image:caption>Here at the Phoenix Clinic, we take our role in providing equitable, systemic therapy seriously, which means that we will always seek to share the knowledge and research that works best for the communities we serve. For graduate student therapists, our training series prepare new clinicians with the necessary tools to enter the mental health field and job market, such as learning about the different roles within mental health and preparing for job interviews as a new therapists. For more seasoned clinicians, we also have offerings that will support developing more sound, anti-racist clinical practices and helping clinicians broaden their systemic and community-centered lens. Through our training and support group programs, we support organizations and teams in developing more equitable and community-centered perspectives and practices.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The wound is the place where the Light enters you.” – Rumi Taylor Ariel Pettway is the Executive Director of the Phoenix Clinic Chicago and a marriage and family therapist in private practice at the Chicago Center for Relationship Counseling. She has previously served as a diversity and inclusion consultant in the Child Welfare department at JCFS Chicago and is currently researching the impact of intergenerational trauma on African American couples and families, having been published in 2018 in the Encyclopedia for Couple and Family Therapy. Taylor holds her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Creative Writing from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia as well as her Master of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Uniquely, Taylor is also certified by the Alabama Department of Education in Secondary English Language Arts Education, grades six through 12 and seeks to utilize her unique set of skills, nestled in between teaching and therapy, in service of the world. Through the lens of self-awareness and narrative telling, Taylor promotes the healing of diverse populations, such as children from infancy to 18, unmarried and married couples, co-parents, single-parent families, foster and adoptive children and families, and other extended families struggling through a myriad of life transitions. Specifically, her areas of clinical focus include parenting and family sculpting with blended and single-parent families, communities of color, intergenerational trauma, systemic racism and oppression, mindfulness body practices, relational conflict, and men and women’s issues.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I'm trained as a Marriage and Family Therapist. I became a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT, in 2000. I've dedicated my professional life to working with individuals, couples and families on understanding what keeps them stuck and then removing the barriers. This process is collaborative and requires a give and take. I take steps to get feedback from the people I work with to help me understand what is helping, and what is not. It is always a privilege to get to know people and develop an understanding of who they are and what makes them choose to act. I am always interested to get to work with people who are similar and different from me. I'm LGBTQIA affirming and value culture, race and gender as critical parts of all of our identities. I strive to be antiracist and work to find my own blind spots. Relationship counseling often leads to understanding vulnerabilities. How do we all manage our fears, our anxieties, our shame and guilt? What place is there in our lives for these aspects of our humanity? Understanding vulnerability with compassion and curiosity is at the heart of psychotherapy. I strive to help clients enhance curiosity and compassion for the most extreme and costly parts of themselves. It seems counter-intuitive, but through this understanding and acceptance, change is possible. I am also dedicated to building the community of helping professionals. I supervise students and professionals and am always excited to meet with other therapists and students to hear about their work and to share my experiences. This community is essential to the longevity of our work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"If we climb high enough, we will reach a height from which tragedy ceases to look tragic." - Irvin D. Yalom As a therapist, I believe in the power of self-awareness in helping people overcome adversity. Trained in Systems Therapy at the Family Institute at Northwestern University, my orientation is to use relationships to help strengthen our understanding of one another, and of ourselves. I work in a way that values the humanistic experience most of all, and strive to learn as much as possible about one's past motivations and ways of coping. I also believe that the therapeutic relationship is the key ingredient in effecting change. I use compassion and acceptance in psychotherapy as tools to help create space for that change. I work with individuals, couples, and families with a variety of constraints including issues with attachment, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, infidelity, divorce, blended families, adoption, grief and loss, phase-of-life, self-development, multiculturalism, and immigration. I am LGBTQIA affirming. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The axe forgets, but the tree remembers.” - African Proverb We face many obstacles in life, but our most significant accomplishment is finding peace during our storms. Our most notable achievement is recognizing that there is always room to grow and improve and be better than where we were the day before. As we live our daily lives, I aim to help people identify their strengths and superpowers to help them overcome the many obstacles and barriers. My duty is to ensure that there is always a safe space with my clients so that clients can always feel safe while welcoming laughter and humor. As I know that the stigma of therapy can be taboo for specific cultural backgrounds, I strive to make sure that I am creating a different experience for those who may be hesitant about reaching out for assistance. I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Interdisciplinary Studies and a Minor in Music from Jackson State University in Jackson, MS. I also have a Master of Arts Degree in Clinical Mental Health from Roosevelt University, Chicago, IL, and I am currently enrolled as a doctoral student of Philosophy in Family Marriage Therapy at National University in San Diego, CA. My therapeutic approach is welcoming all walks of life into a comfortable therapeutic space using Solution-Focused, Intensive Structural Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. My clinical areas of focus are working with adolescents, behavioral issues, childhood trauma, intergenerational trauma/PTSD, anxiety/depressive disorder, self-esteem, men and women issues, infidelity, premarital counseling, grief, stress, communities of color, oppression, mindfulness, self-care, shadow work, and grounding.</image:caption>
